Frequently Asked Questions

What to know about high carbon steel

First thing is first. High carbon steel will rust if not taken care of. However for the small amount of maintenance it requires you gain a huge advantage in performance over stainless steels commonly used. High carbon holds an edge longer, it is much easier to reestablish the edge once gone and the blade is also much tougher therefore able to handle more stress and abuse.

What is Damascus steel?

Damascus or pattern welded steel is all made in house. You will recognize this technique when you see the patterning and lines on the steel that often looks like a topographical map. This is achieved by taking two dissimilar steels and layering them over each other and forge welding them together. Then the steel is drawn out and folded back onto itself over and over again until the layers are built up to create a natural pattern in the steel.

Blade care

-Keep knife clean by using warm water and dish soap. Wipe dry with paper towel and apply a vegetable oil for food knives or a mineral oil, 3 in 1 oil etc for field knives. Use a scotch brite pad or 0000 steel wool if necessary. This can take some of the darker contrast out of damascus over time but will shine the steel up and resist corrosion.
-Do not store knife in Dishwasher
-Oil from fingers is acidic and will cause rust on high carbon steel.
-Hich Carbon steel requires some upkeep and care but if has the advantage of holding an exceptional edge and the ability to regain a razor edge easily once lost from use.
-Care for the blade and it will care for you.
